Bloom-A-ThonĀ® Azaleas
Azalea Care Guide
Bloom-A-Thon® Azaleas are prized for their beautiful, showy blooms that brighten gardens in the spring and fall. To keep these azaleas healthy and vibrant, it's important to provide them with the proper care. By following these tips, your azaleas will continue to bloom for years to come.
1. Watering.
Azaleas require regular watering to thrive. They prefer moist, well-drained soil, so be sure to water deeply but infrequently to avoid waterlogging the roots. During periods of dry weather, it may be necessary to water your azaleas once or twice a week.
2. Fertilization.
Azaleas benefit from regular fertilization during their growing season, typically from spring to early summer. Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer formulated specifically for acid-loving plants. Avoid fertilizers that contain high levels of Nitrogen. High levels of Nitrogen can encourage leaf growth at the expense of flower production.
3. Pruning.
Azaleas require minimal pruning to maintain their shape and encourage healthy growth. Prune your azaleas immediately after flowering, removing any dead or diseased wood and shaping the plant as desired. Avoid pruning during the fall and winter, as this can remove next season's flower buds.
4. Pests and diseases.
Azaleas are susceptible to a number of pests and diseases, including: lace bugs, spider mites, and root rot. Keep an eye out for signs of damage, such as yellowed or spotted leaves, and treat the plant accordingly. Use insecticidal soap or neem oil to control pests and ensure that the soil is well-draining to prevent root rot.
5. Winter care.
Azaleas are generally cold hardy, but they may require some protection during harsh winters. Mulch around the base of the plant with several inches of organic material, like straw or leaves, to insulate the roots from freezing.
